ABOUT CBT
Life may get difficult at times and help from a professional can make things easier.
CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) is a collaborative talking therapy that is now recommended to treat most mental health problems by the NHS and The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) Guidelines.
It aims to help you become your own therapist, so that you will be able to understand and deal with the issues you have now, then learn skills to help you live happier, healthier and more productive lives. Learning and using various techniques to develop life-changing habits which can help you cope with life’s ups and downs.
Sessions are designed to suit your individual needs after working with your therapist to identify your specific goals.
ABOUT ME
As a qualified Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist accredited by the BABCP, I bring over 25 years of experience as a therapist and a nurse to your sessions. I have an MSc Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapies and Degrees in Psychology and Nursing, as well as a Post Graduate Qualification in Primary Mental Health Care. Having worked in the NHS, Social Care and Private Practice I have a wealth of experience to draw on in order to help you.
I am passionate about helping people to improve their mental health and seeing them go forward to live their life in a way that makes them happy.
Whilst using a range of techniques within CBT which are specifically tailored to the individual, I believe in using this scientific approach along with empathy, kindness and even humour to help people find ways to manage their own difficulties. Giving them an opportunity to gain new skills and rediscover abilities, while moving on to using more helpful ways of thinking and behaving.
Professional Standards Register
Being part of the BABCP also means that accredited members are now part of the Professional Standards Register. About Accredited Registers • Being on an Accredited Register means that I am well trained and meet agreed standards of practice. All registers publish a list of qualified practitioners on their website so that people can choose who treats them with confidence. If you are not satisfied with any aspect of your treatment, you can complain, and they will take action to keep the public safe. • Accredited Registers make sure that practitioners on their registers are well trained and meet their standards of practice, so that: - Patients and service users can find the right person to treat them - Employers and commissioners can recruit the right people - GPs can send patients to the right people when they ask for a recommendation • Accreditation means that a register has met the Authority’s demanding standards in the following areas: governance, setting standards for registrants, education and training, managing the register, providing information and complaints handling. • Accreditation does not mean that the Authority has endorsed the efficacy of a treatment or therapy practised, or any other service offered, by registrants on an Accredited Register. • Only registers accredited by the Professional Standards Authority for Health and Social Care can use the Quality Mark. The Quality Mark is a quick and easy way to spot someone who is guaranteed to meet high standards of care. • Accreditation offers healthcare practitioners a means of demonstrating their personal commitment to meeting high standards by joining an Accredited Register. • Being accredited by the Authority offers enhanced protection to anyone seeking healthcare services. People now have the option of choosing practitioners on a register that has been vetted and approved. • Accreditation is an invisible safety net for people getting treatment; the more people use practitioners on a register, the more effective this safety net is. • The Professional Standards Authority for Health and Social Care recommends that anyone seeking care checks that the person they choose is registered with a regulator or Accredited Register. All the Answers You Seek, In One Place
I FEEL SUICIDAL, I NEED TO TALK TO SOMEONE WHAT DO I DO?
If you feeling suicidal or at immediate risk of harm it is extremely important to talk to someone as soon as possible. Please call 999 or 111 now. (111 now has a mental health option you can choose)
Or you can speak to the Samaritans by calling 116 123.
You can also speak to your GP. When you call ask for an urgent appointment. Don't be afraid to tell the receptionist the basic details about why you are calling, they have to maintain your confidentiality and will ensure you get an urgent appointment.
You can also speak to people in your life who care about you. The important thing is that you talk!
When you see your therapist it is also important to let them know about these thoughts and feelings.
HOW LONG DOES EACH THERAPY SESSION TAKE?
Each therapy session will last between 50 minutes and an hour. However, for some specific disorders up to an hour and a half may be needed for some of the sessions.
These sessions will be on a weekly basis.
HOW MANY SESSIONS WILL I NEED?
Every individual is unique and will require a varying number of sessions dependant on the severity of their illness and also how much work they put in between sessions. However, CBT is generally recommended for between 12 and 20 sessions of treatment. However, some issues may require up to 24 sessions of treatment.
WHAT HAPPENS DURING THERAPY?
The first 2 to 3 sessions will be spent completing a detailed assessment to explore what your problems are and how they are affecting you and also what led to you feeling the way you do. Often clients find the assessment like a therapy in it's own right, it can allow them to really express themselves as they would in a counselling session. Many clients start showing the first signs improvement in this part alone.
Following this a program of treatment will be specifically selected and tailored to meet your needs. At this stage, if we haven't done so already, we will work out the best ways for you to practice what you are learning between sessions. Work done between sessions is a major part of the success of CBT and therefore incredibly important.
Towards the end of treatment one or two sessions will be spent creating a relapse prevent plan to help you deal with problems you may encounter in the future.
By the time you finish therapy you will have a file full of the work you have completed. You keep this and can look at it anytime you feel that you need a little boost.
WHY IS CBT MORE EXPENSIVE THAN OTHER THERAPIES?
The NHS website quotes the cost of seeing a specialist in CBT as being between £60 and £100 per session (although this has not been updated for some time), Therapists can charge up to £150 or more per session which can depend on the area in which you live. This cost is due of the level of training required to become a fully qualified and accredited Cognitive Behavioural Therapist. Therapists must have Postgraduate level training as well as a wealth of previous professional experience, generally gained after their Graduate Degree, to be eligible to apply for accreditation with the BABCP. Cognitive Behavioural Therapists are now employed by the NHS at the same level and in the same roles as Psychologists.
Therapists also have to pay for ongoing training and supervision to ensure they continue to provide the highest standards of care. As well as paying for all the usual business expenses.
It may also interest you to know that while you only see your therapist for an hour they will be working on your behalf outside of sessions. They will be planning and preparing, thinking about your case, writing up and reviewing your case notes and often reading up on the latest research to ensure your treatment is of the highest quality.
It is also worth noting that while it may seem expensive it probably adds up to less than the average cost of a holiday and may help you change your life forever.
HOW DO I PAY FOR SESSIONS?
Payment for a session is taken in advance at the time of booking. This can be done via cash or bank transfer
DO YOU HAVE A CANCELLATION POLICY?
Yes, cancellations should be made at least 72 hours before your session. This will enable the therapist to offer the appointment to another client.
If you cancel the session within the 72 hour period you will need to pay for that session in full.
It is important to note that sessions are always paid for in advance.
DO YOUR CLINICS HAVE DISABLED ACCESS?
The clinic room at Riverside Business Park does has disabled access and toilet facilities. Access is via a slope from the free car park with a very small lip over the front door, but from here there are no steps or stairs to the office.
